Pay Equity: At the Heart of Equality

 Pay equity is a question of justice. It is a question of human rights. It is a question of full economic participation for women. It is at the heart of equality. But how can we make it the reality in New Brunswick? Come to this forum to learn and discuss about the progress we are making and the issues we are facing along the way.

v      Hon. Marie-Claude Blais, Minister responsible for Women’s Issues,  Minister of Justice and Attorney General

9:50am            Pay Equity Act, 2009

Under the framework of the legislation affecting the public sector, job descriptions, job evaluations and a pay equity analysis were to be completed by April 1st, 2012.  Wage adjustments were expected to roll out as of this date but significant delays have occurred.

v      Vallie Stearns, Chair of the NB Coalition for Pay Equity will give an update and analysis on the progression of pay equity in the public sector (unionized and non unionized, Crown corporations).

v      Sandy Harding, Provincial President of CUPE Local 2745, will share her local’s experience and tell us why pay equity matters to its members. CUPE Local 2745 represents Educational and Clerical Support Staff in the Schools and District Offices.

v      Open discussion

11 am              Pay equity pilot projects with private sector organizations that offer government-mandated services

v      Elizabeth Blaney, Anglophone Vice-Chair of the NB Coalition for Pay Equity, will discuss the pay equity process established in five sectors providing government-mandated services.

11:45 am         Pay equity legislation for the private sector

v      Lise Savoie, Social Work Professor at the Université de Moncton, will give a portrait of NB women working in the private sector.

v      Denise Savoie, member of the Job Evaluation and the Employment Equity Committees of her employees’ association (Association des techniciennes et techniciens de l'Université de Moncton), will explain why legislation is important for the private sector, based on her experience.
