Coalition wants action on pay equity during the provincial governments second year in power

2015-09-21

“It is time for the Gallant government to move forward on its pay equity election promises,” says Jula Hughes, Anglophone Vice-Chair of the New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity. “The government is just about to enter the second year of its mandate and so far, it has done little for pay equity. The government has an opportunity and an obligation to improve the financial situation of thousands of women by implementing non-discriminatory wages.”

The New Brunswick Liberal platform (pp 29-30) included:

·         Improving the pay equity adjustment methodology and requiring organizations with more than 50 employees who do business with government through procurement or financing programs to implement pay equity plans.

·         Ensuring the Pay Equity Act of 2009 is fully implemented across all parts of government, including Crown corporations.

“We are looking for action on these promises and will collaborate the best we can with the government. We want this to be a success story,” continues Jula Hughes.

“In the absence of pay equity legislation in the private sector, the government will have to establish reliable mechanisms and ensure that organizations truly implement pay equity plans,” says Johanne Perron, Executive Director of the Coalition.

“We want to have confidence that employers analyse and compare predominantly female jobs with male jobs based on responsibilities, qualifications, effort, and working conditions. If the evaluation shows that female jobs are not paid equally to male jobs of the same value, employers have to adjust the wages for female jobs,” explains Johanne Perron.

Jula Hughes says that the Coalition will continue to advocate for pay equity legislation in the private sector: “Equal pay for work of equal value is a human right and should not be left to voluntary measures.”
