NB will join the World March of Women 2010!

2010-04-16

This Friday, April 16, on the eve of the anniversary of NB women’s right to vote and of Equality Day, representatives of New Brunswick groups of women gathered in Moncton to announce their provincial plan surrounding strategies and activities for the World March of Women 2010.

They expect over 300 women from across the province to join a march followed by a work session, in Fredericton, in mid-October 2010. Together they will review the progress made in the last 10 years and explore the gaps that remain.

“This will be an occasion to celebrate our achievements,” says Huberte Gautreau, Co-Chair of the event. She says that much has happened since NB women came together 10 years ago for the World March 2000, asking for pay equity legislation in the public and private sector and for the elimination of violence against women. The government has developed a comprehensive strategy to eliminate violence against women and just adopted the Pay Equity Act, 2009 which covers the public sector.

Nancy Hartling, the other Co-Chair of the event, says that women will be mobilizing in 50 countries under the theme “Women on the March Until We Are All Free!” New Brunswick will join them to demand actions to increase women’s economic autonomy, their access to resources and the elimination of violence against women.

“The World March of Women 2010 will be the perfect time to focus on common goals for the next 10 years,” says Nancy Hartling. “We will bring our renewed requests to the government.”

The October event will also highlight the 40th anniversary of the report from the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, which was submitted on September 28, 1970.

“Together, women have the power to press for change and social justice”, concludes Huberte Gautreau.
