The Coalition for Pay Equity is Still Standing! in Saint John & area: Special Saint John Launch of its second fundraising campaign

Saint John – The Saint John Regional Committee for the New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity hosted a local event to promote the 2nd annual fundraising campaign to support the work of the New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity. The event took place at Centenary-Queen Square United (storefront) Church, on November 16th 2011.

“Thanks to new donations, the Coalition has now reached 50% of its fundraising objective. We still need to raise $40,000”, said Dr. Pamela Coates, co-president of the “Still Standing” fundraising campaign. The Coalition has set its objective at $80,000. The first fundraising campaign brought in nearly $77,000. Little chairs sculpted in porcelain paper by Acadian artist Marie Ulmer are also available for purchase.

Participation was lively at the Saint John event. “A vital component of local fundraising is increased understanding and commitment to pay equity issues,” said Gail Taylor, local Chair.

During the Saint John event, Shelley Gauthier said she had personal experience of the need for pay equity. After getting an $18,500 college certificate in child and youth care, she went from job to job in related fields – special care home, group homes, and child care - trying to pay her debt. She finally concluded that she could not make ends meet while working in this sector, especially now that she has a child and has to face the extra cost of child care.

Donations will be used by the Coalition to persuade the provincial government to adopt pay equity legislation in the private sector and to make pay equity adjustments in four areas of employment it regulates, including employees in child care facilities, home care agencies, community residences, and transition houses for abused women.

The public is invited to make donations by cheque or via Paypal on this site: www.equite-equity.com.
