The NB Coalition for Pay Equity completes
its 2nd annual fundraising campaign

The New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity is proud to announce that it has gathered over $62,000 with its second fundraising campaign, thanks to the generosity of unions, religious communities, and over 150 individual donors who recognize the necessity for its advocacy work.

The campaign’s Co-Chairs, Louise Imbeault and Pamela Coates, said that it is a huge accomplishment for an advocacy organization, which is unable to give out income tax receipts. They also emphasized that the raised funds have allowed the Coalition to make gains for pay equity.

“I am happy to say that contributions made by individuals and organizations will help to improve the lives of thousands of New Brunswick women. They supported the Coalition’s collective work. As a result, the provincial government committed to make pay equity adjustments for four groups in the private sector and for all the public sector, over the next six years, beginning with $6.4 million this year. It is another step forward,” says Louise Imbeault.

Pamela Coates, a long-time anti-poverty activist, adds: “I invite the population to continue sending donations by cheques or via Paypal through the Coalition’s website (www.equite-equity.com), even if the 2011-2012 campaign is completed. The Coalition must continue to advocate for pay equity legislation in the private sector. Too many workers still do not receive equal pay for work of equal value and even live in poverty sometimes, despite their contribution to the economy.”

The Coalition made the decision to hold annual fundraising campaigns following the federal funding cuts to advocacy work for women’s rights. “It has become quite clear that it will be the only way to obtain pay equity legislation in the private sector”, says Louise Imbeault. “Even though we did not reach our target amount this year and that more work is needed, we established a better structure for annual campaigns and I am confident for the Coalition’s future”.
