Moncton – On this International Women’s Day, the Regroupement féministe du Nouveau-Brunswick (RFNB) and the New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity call attention to issues that continue to be of concern to New Brunswickers.
“On this day of celebration, it is important to highlight the progress made in achieving gender equality. However, our work is far from over because too many inequalities still persist today,” says Johanne Perron, the Coalition Executive Director. “Investing in gender equality is not only the right thing to do, but it is essential to prosperity and economic growth. We are calling on the government to address and invest in these issues in the upcoming provincial budget.”
This event succeeds a letter sent to provincial elected representatives last December, penned by five organizations that advocate for women’s rights. The letter underlined the importance of a concerted effort by government to address issues of concern to New Brunswick women, such as housing, the elimination of gender-based violence, private sector pay equity and child-care services.
“We want to highlight these issues and ensure that they are taking up space in our public discourse” explains Nelly Dennene, the RFNB Executive Director. “We emphasize the importance of analyzing public policies from a gender perspective to better understand their effects on women, men and gender minorities, in all their diversity. International Women's Day is a day to celebrate, but above all to continue to make progress in terms of equity and equality, especially ahead of the provincial budget.”
In collaboration with YWCA Moncton, Saint John Women’s Empowerment Network, and NB South Central Transition House and Second Stage Coalition, we invite you to the Aberdeen Cultural Center from 7 to 9 pm for a casual roundtable evening and a light snack to celebrate International Women's Day.
