12:40            Minister Monsef and her staff arrive at the Autumn Lee Retirement Home (2031 Mountain Road) and are greeted by Nanci-Jean Waugh. 

12:42            Minister Monsef is escorted to green room where she will meet with Frances LeBlanc, President, and Johanne Perron, Executive Director, NB Coalition for Pay Equity, and Minister Petitpas-Taylor, and receive her briefing prior to the event.   

12:45            Meeting with the NB Coalition for Pay Equity followed by a briefing.

12:58            Event participants are escorted to the event space.

  • Good afternoon.
  • Welcome to all in attendance including Minister Maryam Monsef, Minister Petitpas-Taylor, partners and allies.
  • I am Frances LeBlanc and I chair the NB Coalition for Pay Equity.
  • The Coalition for Pay Equity represents a group of individuals and organizations that work to educate and advocate for the adoption of pay equity legislation for all workers.
  • We believe in a society that value the work and efforts of all its workers – especially those sectors that are traditionally under-valued and under-paid – the work traditionally or predominantly done by women.
  • The Coalition for Pay Equity prides itself on amplifying the voices and experiences of workers – including those in the care sector.
  • Today, we are gathered for a special announcement. The announcement highlights the importance of continuing to work diligently to ensure that injustices are remedied.
  • However, this work would not be possible without working collaboratively with other partners and stakeholders, allies and of course workers.
  • We will also continue to work provincially with all political parties to advance the need for pay equity legislation for the private sector.
  • Notably, we would like to acknowledge the clear commitment of the federal government in addressing gender inequities.
  • In fact, the federal government took a very important step to improve women’s equality, by introducing pay equity legislation for federally-regulated workers, something that the women and the labour movements have been asking for, for decades.
  • We are encouraged that women’s rights and social justice has such strong proponents – including the Member of Parliament for Moncton – Riverview – Dieppe and federal Minister of Health the Honourable Ginette Petitpas-Taylor.

Merci Frances et bonjour tout le monde.

I am so proud of this project because it will tackle the root causes of pay inequity in the care giving sector, with and for employees.

On sait que les emplois de soins communautaires sont souvent sous-évalués et conséquemment, sous-payés.

On parle :

  • des résidences communautaires,
  • des centres ADAPF,
  • des foyers de soins spéciaux (niveaux 1 et 2),
  • des maisons d’hébergement pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale,
  • des services de garde, etc.

In New Brunswick, around 12 to 15 000 people provide these key services and over 90 % of them are women.

Their work is often seen as an extension of the work that women have been traditionally providing for free in their families.

Malheureusement, on ne reconnait pas suffisamment les qualifications, les responsabilités, les conditions de travail et les efforts requis pour ce travail, si fondamental dans notre société.

Le salaire des travailleuses de soins communautaires tourne autour de 12 à 15 $ l’heure. C’est clairement insuffisant quand on compare à des emplois à prédominance masculine. Par ex, au N.-B., les mécaniciens gagnaient en moyenne près de 24 $ l’heure en 2017.

C’est pour ça que la Coalition a développé un projet pour changer cette situation avec ses partenaires.

Notre projet compte trois composantes :

l’éducation,

l’évaluation et

la revendication.

We will educate the population on the value of care-giving work and educate care-giving workers on pay equity – equal pay for work of equal value.

We will evaluate one job per care-giving field, with the help of workers and employers, and compare them with male-dominated jobs in order to determine what pay equity wages would be like, for the sector.

That information will help us to advocate for better wages with and for care-giving workers.

I would like to thank our key partners in this project:

  • the Human Service Coalition (employees and employers),
  • CUPE NB and
  • the Women’s Equality Branch of New Brunswick (expertise).

Évidemment, le gouvernement fédéral, avec le financement que la ministre Monsef vient d’annoncer, est un partenaire clé dans ce projet.

Nous apprécions leur appui à nos efforts pour valoriser le travail de soins communautaires au Nouveau-Brunswick.
