Statement from Johanne Perron, Executive Director of theNew Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity, on the Speech from the Throne
“We welcome today’s commitment in the Speech from the Throne to modernize and expand New Brunswick’s Pay Equity Act, 2009 in the spring of 2027.
In September, New Brunswickers were invited to participate in public consultations as part of a review of the Pay Equity Act. The information collected will help with the modernization and expansion of the Act in the spring session.
The Act should be extended to all private-sector workplaces, including the care sector, non-profit organizations, universities, and municipalities.
Women working in undervalued jobs have waited long enough for pay equity. After decades of calls from workers, unions, and community groups, we are pleased that the government is listening and taking action.
Pay equity speaks directly to the government’s two priorities. It puts more money in the pockets of women and their families, at a time when affordability is top of mind. And it helps the care sector recruit and keep the workers our health care system depends on.
We’re ready to help get this right.”
The Coalition encourages everyone to take part in the public consultation open until October 30:
