Pay Equity is Coming to Town!

Pay Equity is Coming to Town!

The Problem

In New Brunswick, the Pay Equity Act (2009) does not apply to municipalities. A few have implemented pay equity, but only on a voluntary basis.

The Solution?

We advocate to legislate pay equity in municipalities.

In order to promote pay equity legislation in municipalities, we have launched Pay Equity is Coming to Town!, a campaign designed to guide local governments through the pay equity process with the help of policies, best practices, and the financial support of Women and Gender Equality Canada.

It's the right time! Local governance reform has led to major changes in municipal workforce. As a result, they must review and adjust their compensation systems. It's the perfect time to restructure the salary grid for consistency and fairness through pay equity legislation!

Legislating Pay Equity for Municipalities

(November 2023 - March 2026)

1. Analyze the municipal government structure and its pay systems. Hold meetings and discussions with stakeholders, and create a committee to advise and support the Coalition as it implements the project.

2. Prepare a manual or other informational medium. Produce and offer training to meet the needs of local governments.

Local governance reform by the numbers

Since January 1, 2023, the province has gone from:

• 104 municipalities to 77 local governments (municipalities and rural communities)

• 236 districts to 12 rural districts
